OUTLINE OF THE PROJECT
- The project is located 34 km off the Marches coast, which is far enough to fall within international waters. The ship will not be visible at 34 km from the shore due to the Earth's curvature.
- The Marche region is involved because the gas connection pipeline will cross its territory.
- Use of advanced technologies, which have been already adopted and tested in other cases and will enable regasification on board a ship 34 km off the coast. The gas will be then conveyed to the Snam gas transport network through a connection line.
- Minimal environmental impact.
- A regasification capacity of 5 billion cubic meters
- The commissioning is expected in 2012/2013. The start of construction work is expected in 2010.
- LNG stocks from the GDF SUEZ portfolio to ensure continuous gas supply for the project and thus a complete use of the structure.
- No impact on tourist activities, work not coinciding with the tourist season.
LOCATION
Scossicci area was chosen as the onshore arrival point of the gas connection line after the evaluation of over 200 km of coast between Emilia Romagna and Marches.
More than 40 potential sites where examined in the light of various considerations, among which:
- Onshore landing in areas free from environmental constraints
- Compatibility with the territorial planning in force on municipal and supra-municipal scale
- To avoid any interference with areas involved in fish breeding, shipping, military areas, etc.
- Distance from the national transportation network
- Depth of waters and favorable meteo-marine conditions
- Distance and topography of the coast
- Anthropization level of the coast
- Environmental, artistic and cultural heritage preservation
- A place where the railway is not adjacent to the coast
OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE LOCAL TERRITORY AND THE COUNTRY
- It will be an infrastructure of national interest enabling to:
- diversify the sources of supply
- ensure constant gas supply
- ensure greater safety of supplies
- more liquidity of the market thanks to an increase in imports: an important requirement for the development of higher levels of competition
- A contribution to the regional energy balance
- The project is open to the participation of the Region and/or local public and private stakeholders
- GDF SUEZ will make every effort to involve the local companies in the provision of useful and necessary work/services for the construction of the plant.
